Improv Courses at The VLC Playground
How it works:
Courses run from late September to early July. Our offerings are divided into trimesters* and fall under 4 basic pathways:
ESSENTIALS: If you’re a beginner, the first 3 trimesters at The VLC Playground are spent in Improv Essentials. Improv Essentials is designed to introduce you to the basics of improv (yes and, listening, accepting ideas, building confidence on stage, etc.).
CORE: Improv Core is the home for those who want to continue to have fun and practice their improv skills (listening, trust, collaboration, etc.). You’ll touch on a few performance skills but you might not be interested (or ready!) to commit to mastering the advanced improv skills covered in our Improv Deep Dive Pathway.
DEEP DIVE: Improv Deep Dive is for those who are interested in diving in and mastering more advanced performance skills (improvised character creation, conveying emotion, carrying longer scenes, etc.). This pathway pulls from our extensive curriculum (see below) to make you a competent and confident performer.
COACHING: Team coaching is for established teams who want to level up and get pointed feedback and support with building specific skills or perfecting a chosen format.
* Trimesters contain 12-13 weeks of classes and include a showcase performance

IMPROV DEEP DIVE
Improv Deep Dive Classes will pull from our curriculum menu below. Based on the needs and interests of your Deep Dive group, your facilitator will build classes that target the advanced improv skills you need to level up your performance skills.
-
Throughout the course, you'll delve into techniques for crafting unique, multi-dimensional characters and bringing them to life on stage. Learn to explore and develop characters through their body, voice and energy. Discover how to adapt and evolve your characters in real-time, making them resonate deeply with your audience.
-
Explore emotions in improv! In long-form improv, one of the main techniques to ground a scene is to connect and react emotionally to what is being created on stage. In this course you’ll learn techniques to identify, connect and amplify your emotions, and explore how to connect with your scene partners and audience on a deeper level, making your improv more impactful and memorable.
-
Learn to craft scenes that are not only compelling to watch, but truly joyful to play. Leave overthinking behind and start inhabiting your scenes through emotion, silence, and authentic presence. Tune into your scene partner and learn to read the scene instead of trying to write it.
Develop your director's improv brain, discovering how your stage position, your pauses, and your intentions shape the entire moment.
Explore the rich dynamics of status in two-person scenes, trios, and group work, using mono-scenes as a backdrop. Learn to identify character status, use it to add depth and texture, and shift it intentionally to influence rhythm, tension, and play — including how small relational shifts can sustain a long, continuous scene with clarity and momentum. Build the tools to navigate scenes with multiple players through the lens of status, always reading the scene, never writing it.
-
Learn diverse techniques and resources to craft dynamic narratives, develop plot, jump through time and space, and make sense of stories as they unfold — building the structure of a long-form story both from within and from the sidelines.
Explore sophisticated narrative techniques and expand your improv director and scriptwriter mind, managing complex multi-threaded narratives, mastering callbacks and thematic weaving, and shaping organic, dynamic editing. Direct scenes from within and outside as both performer and story steward, developing the directorial instincts to know when to step forward or back, how to support struggling scenes, and how to maintain narrative coherence while preserving spontaneity and adding texture to the story.
-
Step beyond empty stages and start living inside the worlds you create. Let go of literal thinking and build environments through sensory detail, embodied space, and shared imagination. Learn to feel the world with your partner—its textures, its rules, its rhythm—and allow the scene to reveal itself rather than forcing it. Develop your world-builder’s improv brain, discovering how your gestures, focus, and physical choices shape not just the moment, but the entire reality you’re playing in.
-
Learn to spot patterns hiding in plain sight — the unusual thing, the repeated word, the odd behavior that wants to become a game. Sharpen your eye for what's already happening in a scene, and find the confidence to name it, heighten it, and play it out with your partner.
Explore how games emerge organically from character, relationship, and environment, rather than being imposed from outside. Learn to recognize the first unusual thing, build a clear pattern, and find fresh variations that keep the game alive without repeating yourself. You'll develop an instinct for when to introduce a game, when to let one breathe, and when to let it go — all while staying grounded in the scene, not just the structure.
